Shakespeare
Definition
once a member of the acting company in London known as Lord Chamberlain's Men, he excelled in tragedy, comedy, and history. Wrote with extraordinary verse, in powerful metaphors, and with musical language (iambic pentameter creates this flow). Developed well-rounded and detailed characters and was a master of episodic plot structure. His plays were produced at The Globe Theater.
Term
Public Theaters
Definition
outdoor performing spaces were all levels of society could attend. Stage platform was elevated to allow trapdoors in the floor and the tiring house (where actors changed costumes) was behind the stage and was used to store set pieces. Set had an upper area for balcony scenes and a third level called the musician's gallery. Spectators, called groundlings, stood in the yard (area in front of the stage) and sat in box seats and galleries higher up. There was no painted scenery and since the scenes changed quickly due to Shakespeare's episodic plots, there were minimal properties to suggest locales.
