Term
Macule (Lentigins)
Definition
Is a discoloration of the skin's surface. Are flat areas, and although they are usually rounded and distinct, they may be oval, irregular or have an outline to gradually fades into surrounding tissues. Ex: Freckle
Term

Definition
Highly contagious viral infection that lies dormant between outbreaks. It causes eruptive, blister-like clusters that are typically found on the mucous membranes or skin around the mouth, nose or genital area.
Term
Cyst
Definition
Is an abnormal membranous sac containing a gaseous, liquid or semi-solid substance. It is above and below the skin and is round like a knot.
Term

Definition
Is a solid mass within the skin. It may be soft or hard, fixed or freely moving. Abnormal cell masses; round.
Term
Hives (Wheals)
Definition
Are an allergic reaction that produce an eruption of wheals. Also referred to as Urticariam, these rashes are triggered by a release of histamine in the body. Caused by drugs, viruses, insect bites and foods such as nuts, chocolate, fish, berries & eggs.
Term
Tubercle
Definition
Large pimple containing pus; can be above or below skin. Larger than a papule.
Term
Psoriasis
Definition
Is an inheritable disease that can be triggered by environmental factors if a person is genetically predisposed to the disease. Produces an excess of thick, scaly, silvery skin patches surrounded by a red area. Caused by an increased growth of skin cells where the patches appear. Not contagious.
Term

Definition
Is a dried mass that is the remains of an oozing sore. The crusty material may contain blood, pus, sebum, epithelial tissue and bacterial debris. Ex: Scab on a sore
Term
Excoriation
Definition
Is a mechanical abrasion of the epidermis. Appears bright to dark red because of dried blood, and occurs when insect bites, scabs or acne breakouts are scratched. Ex: Scratches to the surface of the skin
Term

Definition
Thick scar. Laser surgery can smooth out.
Term

Term
Verruca
Definition
AKA Warts. Are viral infections on the top layer of the skin that are caused by the Human Pappiloma Virus (HPV). Produce rough keratotic (deep, horny skin layer) skin growths, which are commonly found on the hands, fingers, feet and genitals.
