Columbus landed in Dominica in 1492 and annihilated the Arawaks but started the Columbian Exchange

 

Cortez killed the Aztecs

 

Pizarro killed the Incas

 

The conquistadors started the ecomienda (plantation) system, beginning the slave trade and slowing the development of the countries affected

 

They brought Roman Catholocism to the area and created Mestizos.  They changed the language to Portugese or Spanish

Explain what apartheid is, how it was used in South Africa, and how it was finally abolished in recent decades.

Definition

Apartheid is the seperation of people on the basis of race and was in effect in South Africa from 1948-1990

The government was white British but 90% of the population were black

Blacks were forced to live on Bantustans and denied citizenship

1950s/60s-ANC student groups protest

1964-Nelson Mandela is imprisoned for treason

1960-Sharpeville Massacre-70 innocent protesters killed by government

1987-1994-F.W. Deklerk was President

1990-Deklerk ends apartheid and Mandela is freed

1994-ANC wins 62% of vote in elections, making Mandela president

Current Day-President is Thabo Mbeki and government is giving money to victims of apartheid

Early 1990's-Uses 5th brigade to destroy political opposition

Late 1990's-Begins land redistribution (taking white's land and giving it to poor blacks who don't know how to use it, making the entire population poorer than before)

Also centeralizes economy which leads to massive inflation which doesn't really matter because there's nothing to buy anyway

2008-elections-Mugabe loses but refuses to leave office
