Definition
| Lombards were invaded from the north. They destroyed Christian churches. Soon after Charlemagne ascended the throne, it became clear that Pepin's settlement could never be safe while the Lombard kingdom existed. In 773 Charlemagne led his warriors into Italy, captured the Lombard capital of Pavia, put the Lombard king in a monastery and assumed the Lombard crown. He crowned his son Pepin king of Italy in 780. |
