Definition

If the Blood Agar Plate Test reveals that the strep bacteria is alpha hemolytic then a disk treated with optochin may be added.

 

inhibited growth: streptococcus pneumoniae

uninhibited growth: alpha streptococci

 

Alpha strep are normal flora of the mouth

Bacitracin
Definition

Used to separate diffrent classes (A, B, C, D, etc.) of beta hemolytic streptococcus. A is the only one that is very dangerous and responsible for erysipelas, scarlet fever, and septic sore throat.

 

A bacitracin disk is added to the blood agar plate.

Type A will show sensitivity, others will not
