Definition

Classification: Opioid Analgesic


Indications: Moderate to severe pain


Action: Binds to opiod receptors in the CNS. Decrease in moderate to severe pain


Major Side Effects: dizziness, euphoria, hallucinations, headache, sedation, nausea


Routes: PO, IM, IV, SQ

Definition

Classification: Antianginal, Calcium channel blocker


Indications: Managment of hypertension, angina pectoris, and/or vasospastic angina.


Action: Systemic vasodilation resulting in decreased blood pressure. supression of venticular tachyarrhythmias


Major Side Effects: arrhythmias, CHF, Stevens-Johnsons Syndrome


Routes: PO, IV

Definition

Classification: Antihypertensive, thiazide diuretic


Indications: Management of mild to moderate hypertension. Treatment of edema associated with: CHF, Renal dysfunction, Cirrhosis, glucocorticoid therapy, estrogen therapy


Action: lowering of blood pressure in hypertensive patients and diauresis with mobilization of edema


Major Side Effects: hypokalemia, dizziness, drowiness, lethargy

Definition

Classification: ACE inhibitors


Indications: decreased progression of diabetic neuropathy


Action: lowering of blood pressure in hypertensive patients, decreased progression of diabetic neruopathy


Major Side Effects: angioedema, agranulocytosis, cough, hypotension, taste disturbances

Definition

Classification: potassium sparing diuretics


Indications: Counteract potassium loss caused by other diuretics. Used to treat edema and hypertension. Primary hyperaldosteronism.


Action: weak diuretic and antihypertensive response when compared with other diuretics. Conservation of potassium.


Major Side Effects: hyperkalemia, agranulocytosis, dizziness

Definition

Classification: Allergy, Cough and cold remedies, antihistamines, antitussivesv


Indications: relief of allergic symptoms caused by histamine release including: anaphylaxis, seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and allergic dermatoses.


Action: Decreased symptoms of histamine excess. relief of acute dystonic reactions. supression of cough


Major Side Effects: drowiness, anorexia, dry mouth, dizziness

Definition

Classification: antidote, mucolytic


Indications: Mucolytic therapy for adnormal, viscid, or inspissated, mucus secretions in acute and chronic brochopulmonary disease


Action: splits links in the mucoproteins contained in respiratory mucus secretions, decreasing the viscosity of the mucus.


Major Side Effects: nausea, stomatitis, urticaria, rhinorrhea, vomiting


Routes: PO, IV, inhalation

Definition

Classification: Antihypertensive, angiotensin II receptor antagonist


Indications: Managment of hypertension, management of CHF in patients who cannot tolerate ACE inhibitors, diabetic neuropathy


Action: lowering of blood pressure, slowed progression of diabetic neuropathy, decreased risk of stroke in patients with hypertenison and left ventricular hypertrophy


Major Side Effects: dizziness, hypotension, angioedema, anxiety, chest pain

Indications: hypertensive crises. controlled hypertension during anesthesia


Action: rapid lowering of blood pressure. decreased cardiac preload and afterload

Classification: allergy, cold, and cough remedies, expectorant


Indications: coughs associated with viral upper respiratory tract infections


Action: mobilization and subsequent expectoration of mucus


Major Side Effects: Dizziness, headache, nausea, diarrhea

Definition

Classification: mast cell stabilizer


Indications: management of asthma, prevention of excercise induced bronchospasms. Prevention and treatment of seasonal and pennial allergic rhinitis.


Action: decreased frequency and intensity of asthmatic episodes, allergic reactions, and mastocytosis


Major Side Effects: anaphylaxis, nasal irritation, cough, irritation of the throat and trachea.
