How did Auburn get its colors?
Definition
Dr. Petrie brought the colors to Auburn from the University of Virginia, which is where he graduated from. The University of Virginia had to come up with separate colors for their athletic teams because they did not want to desecrate their school colors that were inspired by a Confederate uniform with blood on it. The colors orange and blue came from a rowing scarf that a student was wearing to one of the games. He got the scarf from the Grosvenor Rowing Club, owned by the Duke of Westminster, when he was on a trip to England. The colors were officially added to the A.P.I. Seal in 1949.
