Infratemporal Fossa
Definition
1)Bounded laterally by the ramus of the mandible, medially by the lateral pterygoid plate of the sphenoid bone, anteriorly by the maxilla, and superiorly by the greater wing of the sphenoid bone
2)Lacks bony walls on its posterior and inferior aspects

a)Sphenomandibular Ligament
Extends from the spine of the sphenoid to the lingula

Pterygopalatine Fossa (1)
Definition
1)Pyramidal fossa that lies medial to the infratemporal fossa
2)Boundaries
Anterior wall - maxillary bone containing the inferior orbital fissure that connects the fossa to the orbit and transmits the zygomatic and infraorbital nerves and the corresponding vessels
b)Posterior wall - formed by the pterygoid plates of the sphenoid that contains the pterygoid canal for the corresponding nerve, artery, and vein
c)Lateral wall – is an incomplete wall that contains the pterygomaxillary fissure that connects the pterygopalatine fossa to the infratemporal fossa, and transmits the maxillary artery

Definition
d) Medial wall
- formed by the perpendicular plate of the palatine bone that separates this fossa from the nasal cavity
- Contains the sphenopalatine foramen that transmits the corresponding vessels and the nasopalatine nerves
e)Roof
formed by the greater wing of the sphenoid
contains the foramen rotundum that connects the pterygopalatine fossa to the middle cranial fossa, transmitting the maxillary nerve
f)Floor
- formed by the junction of the pterygoid plates and the maxilla
- contains the lesser and greater palatine canals that give passage to the lesser and greater palatine nerves and descending palatine vessels
