Simile =  is a figure of speech comparing two unlike things, often introduced with the word "like" or "as".

as smooth as sandpaper/drinks like a fish


Analogy = comparison of two alike things in order to illustrate idea/concept

blood vessels are like highways

 

Metaphor figure of speech comparing two similar things without the use of "like" or "as"

Definition

Actinides: the row of elements below the periodic table, from thorium to lawrencium


Action Potential: a large transient depolarization event conducted along the membrane of a muscle cell or nerve fiber inciting a muscle contraction or nerve impulse.


Active transport: membrane transport requiring ATP

(ie: Na+/K+ pump)

Adhesion: molecular attraction between dissimilar molecules; attraction between water molecules and molecules that make up the inside of a xylem tube


Adrenergic fibers: nerve fibers that release norepinephrine

THREE ROCK TYPES

 

ROCK CYCLE: a group of changes that transform one type of rock into another

Definition

Igneous: made when magma (hot liquid made of melted minerals) cools.  Magma can slowly cool underground or quickly on the earth's surface, where it is called lava


Sedimentary: formed when sediments, pieces of rocks broken off by weathering and erosion, are compacted and cemented together.


Metamorphic: formed when rock is transformed by heat and pressure.
