- undergoes disintegration, drug is released, but is obviously not intended to be absorbed
- only intended to have a local effect and be absorbed in the vaginal tract
- ovoid shaped inserted using an inserter
- ex. nystatin ; gyne-lotrimin (clotrimazole)

- ex. cepastat, cepacol (benzocaine), mycelex (clotrimazole)

- undergo effervescence in water ; when the acid and the base react with water they form carbonic acid; this helps break up tablet
