Definition
“the Education for All Handicapped Children Act” passed in 1975 provided Federal funding for handicapped children to receive an appropriate, free public education. It was reauthorized as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Definition
School Social Work license requires a person to take a school social work class and an education class. License is granted by the department of public instruction. Must be licensed to be a school social worker in NC. To get a license one must have an msw or bsw and take these two classes. No exam for licensure. The wealthier school systems require msw’s for school social workers while the smaller systems have mostly bsws.

Definition
services for homeless children—came out of a law suit for protection of children who are homeless. Children who are homeless must be kept in the same school. Free transportation must be provided by the school system to transport the child to their same school when the family becomes homeless and keeps moving from shelter to shelter or from temporary living situation to the next.

Definition
Individual Family Service Plan- plan that documents and guides the early intervention process for children with disabilities and their families. Through the IFSP process, family members and service providers work as a team to plan, implement, and evaluate services tailored to the family’s unique concerns, priorities, and resources. IFSP enables families to access services such as speech, occupational and physical therapy for their children from birth to age 5.
-helps come up with a plan so family can help child develop healthily

Definition
Child Developmental Services Agency of NC. The CDSA performs developmental assessments of children from birth to age 3 who are suspected of having a developmental delay or disability. If the child is determined to have a delay or disability the CDSA develops an IFSP and arranges for the provision of the recommended services.
