Term
Standard Error of Mean
Definition
Measures the typical distance between sample and population mean.
Conceptually similar to SD.
SD deals with individual x and SEM deals with sample means.
Term
Why Real Limits?
Definition
Individual x scores take up space under the curve.
2 vertical lines represent real limits of binomial x score when dealing with binomials.
Real limits help to find probability and either include or exclude space.
Term
Distribution of Sample Means
Definition
Distribution of all possible samples of a given size (n).
SD: all samples=same size, same n. All n are equal, samples vary.
RD: entirely made up of sample means.
Term
When is the distribution of sample means normal?
Definition
When the sample is greater than or equal to 30.
If population of individual x scores is normally distributed.
Term
Alpha
Definition
Alpha is probability-defines unlikely outcomes based on random variability.
p<.05: statistically significant, evidence is sufficient to reject the null.
Term
Expected Value of Mean
Definition
Mean of all sample means.
Calculated by taking sum of all sample means and dividing by # of samples.
