how are they similar to the US constitution?

Definition

- state constitutions determine how power is allocated to institutions

- similar to the constitution in the fact that they

         - set limits on government

         - provide rights to the people

stat : a law made in the heat of the moment and if the law needs to be changed it only takes the majority vote

 

const : more enduring and much harder to change and it roughly takes about 60% of the state legislature to pass the law

- they are changed because of favoritism

     - ex: small contractors wanting the option to get government money to carry out their projects, versus the government giving large contractors to finish jobs

          - wanted it based on lowest bids, not how much money the company is donating to campaign funds

- at the time of the revolutionary war, there was ten different governments

       - great fear of the executive

- there was an elected governor, but he had little if any control at all

      - limited terms (2 years)

      - limited power over the people

      - no budget to work with

      - governors could only elect a certain number of people

- electing people was defined as popular democracy

 

- andrew jackson was the first president to trust the public opinion rather than the opinions of the elite

- he thoufht that people should elect more people to the government

- lead to the creation of more elections

- attorney general :

     - made a lot of legal requirement decisions

     - position used as a stepping stone to reach other positions such as: governor

     - his views may contradict with that of the secretary of state or governor party wise

Definition

- fragmented governement

- there are a lot of areas where people make their own decions based on their own agendas

- there are areas where there is a more uniform set of people working, but there are many other commsioners added with many different views and outcomes

- the involvement of the board of commisions varries over the US

what do political machines do?

what was their involvement with immigrants?

Definition

- there is a high level of distrust

- in the 1900's this was due to the rise of political machines

- political machines:

     - keep loyalty high

     - creating jobs and making stable jobs

           - stable jobs as long as they supported the political machine

          - people remained loyal because it was money for their jobs [immigrants were a large part of the makeup]
