Definition
A 1942 trial invasion by Canadian troops against Germany’s occupation of this French port town resulted in Canada suffering great losses. The Allies had lost the element of surprise and were forced to land their troops in daylight and were easily machine-gunned down by waiting German soldiers. In addition, poor communication between ships and troops on land also trapped the troops on land and the tanks were ineffective on the pebbled beaches.
