"Fright sickness" - A loss of soul from the body caused by a sudden frightening experience.  Symptoms: nervousness, anorexia, insomnia, listlessness, involuntary muscle tics, and diarrhea.

 

Remedies: teas of orange blossom, brazil wood, or marijuana, figs boiled in vinegar.  A ceremony called "sweeping" where the patient recalls the event, lies in their house and is swept with herbs.  Nutmeg is preventative on journeys.

"Impacted Stomach or surfeit".  Adherence of soft food or difficult-to-digest substances to the stomach wall.  Symptoms: anorexia, stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhea.

 

Diagnosis: If an egg sticks to a part of the stomach when rubbed around it.  Remedies: rubbing stomach or back, popping skin, purgative teas of wormwood, camomile.  Lead and mercury occasionally still given.

"Strong glance" or "evil eye."  Children susceptible.  Cause: when a person of "powerful" gaze glances at someone without touching them.  Symptoms: high fever, vomiting, headache, fainting, convulsions.

 

Diagnosis: Egg broken after being passed over patients body has an "eye" in it or looks cooked.  Remedy: Perpetrator touches patients as soon as possible.  If not, egg is passed over patient's body, put in a bowl and put under head of patient's bed.  If it seems curdled in the morning, Ojo is cured

Definition

"Fallen fontanel."  Severe illness resulting in 10% of loss of body weight in an infant (probably viral dysentary).  Children are commonly felt to be neglected and there is a high degree of maternal guilt.  Caused by a sudden jolt, bump, or fall.  Symptoms: dehydration, crying, inability to achieve suction when nursing, fever, diarrhea.

 

Remedies: Pressing upward on the soft palate with thumbs or fingers, holding the baby upside down over water with or without shaking.  Poultrices applied to fontanel with raw egg, oil, or liniment.

Caused by leaving a hot environment and entering a cold one.  Childhood form causes ear ache.  Adult form causes muscular spasms or facial paralysis.

 

Treatment: For childhood form, blow warm smoke into the ear.  For the adult form, heat a cup and deoxify with a match or candle, then put on the affected area.  Vacuum casues skin to swell and knotted muscles loosen up.
