Romanticism -- commemorate the people fighting for Spain, imaginative because he wasn't there

Expressionism -- showing the anger, fear, terror, anguish, etc. of the people (emotional intensity)

(Goya had similar emotions that were being expressed in this painting)

Definition

The illuminated figure is a secular representation of the crucifixion. 

- Cut on his hand resembles one of the holes from a nail

- willing to die/sacrifice himself for the Spanish cause (Jesus' crucifixion is iconography of self-sacrifice)

- conveys the same emotions as the crucifixion, feelings of despair and tragedy
