Definition

The source of inspiration is the Renaissance (genre is mythology). The cyclops are depicted in myths with one eye, but because Velazquez is a realist painter, he painted them with side profiles. You can only see one eye on the cyclops, but it isn't located in the middle of their head (more realistic). 

 

Aerial perspective (blurred face in the background)

 

Limited color palate and the expressive facial expressions (i.e. shock) also makes this baroque

The most important scene (the fable of arachne) is in the background of the painting rather than the foreground.

Pallas Athena is in the background wearing the helmet. Arachne is looking at her, and behind Arachne is the tapestry made in the mythological context between the two of them. It depicts the Rape of Europa.

 

In the foreground are spinners, whose outstretched legs and bent positions create diagonals that create the illusion of movement.
