Asking questions: Question Formation

Statements in Spanish are normally formed by using a subject, then the verb, and then an object and/or description

Negative statements are formed by using a negative immediately before the verb.

Questions are usually formed by placing the subject after the verb, with the object and/or any description either following or preceding the subject (gustar is different)

Definition
  • Ernesto (subject) tiene (verb) un perro (object) grande (adjective)
  • Ernestito no tiene un perro grande
  • Es (verb) joven (description) Esteban (subject)? - Is Esteban young?
  • Eres trabajadora, Nora?  Are you (Nora) hard-working (person)?
  • Tiene hermanos amanda - does Amanda have brothers and sisters?
  • quieres un reloj para el dia de tu cumpleanos? - Do you want a watch for your birthday?
  • Nació en abril Pilar? - Was Pilar born in April?

 ¿Dónde? - Where

 ¿Cómo? - How

 ¿Quién? - Who

 ¿Por qué? - why

 ¿Qué? - What

¿Cuál? - Which

Term

Telling time:  Hours and Minutes

In both cases, the answer to asking what time it is usually begins with son

Es (not son) is used to tell the time with one o'clock and between oo'clock and two o'clock

Use menos (less) or para (to, till) to express minutes before the hour

Use cuarto (quarter) and media (half) for fiteen and thirty minutes

Use a to express when (at what time an even occurs)

Definition
  • ¿Qué hora es? - What time is it?
  • ¿Qué hora tiene usted? - what time do you have?
  • Son las tres - it's three o'clock
  • Es la una - it is one o'clock
  • Es la una y veinte - one twenty
  • Son las seis y diez - It's 10 after 6
  • Son las siete menos veinte - it's twenty to seven. (literally; it's seven less twenty)
  • Son veinte para las siete - It's twenty to (till) seven
  • son las tres y cuarto (media) - it's a quarter after (half past) three
  • a la una - at one o'clock
  • Tengo clase a las nueve - I have class at nine
  • el concierto es a las ocho - the concert is at eight
Term

Expressing likes and dislikes: gustar + infinitive

(it is similar to the English expression - to be pleasing to someone)

Since le gusta can refer to you, him, or her, and les gusta can refer to you or them, Spanish speakers often expand the sentence to be more specifice.  They use phrases with a (to)
