a

(the personal a)

Definition

The personal "a" in Spanish does not directly translate into English, but it is needed when the object of the sentence is a person or people.  Examples of the preposition "a":

-Debes conocer a Ricardo.
-You should meet Ricardo.

-Beso a mi mamá cada mañana.

-I kiss my mom every morning.

-Voy a ver a la doctora esta tarde.

-I'm going to see the doctor this afternoon.

*The personal "a" before the definite article "el" becomes "al" as in the following statement:

-Conocemos bien al presidente de los Estados Unidos.

-We know the president of the United States well.
