The Day

of the Dead

Definition

El Día de los Muertos

November 2nd. Family members and friends who have died are remembered. One of the main rituals involves setting up an altar at home. A photograph of the deceased is positioned in the middle of the altar. Placed next to it are Christian icons and things that the person enjoyed most, such as food, books or even alcohol. In addition, there are usually decorations such as flowers and candles. Skull-shaped sweets called "calaveritas" and the "bread of the dead," made especially for this day, are given to children and teenagers. A visit to the cemetery is also important. Laden with flowers and food, families gather together and light candles.
