Term
Solenoid Valves
Definition
Are ELECTRICALLY OPERATED gas valves
Term
Solenoid Valves
PURPOSE
Definition
To turn ON or OFF a gas supply by electrical means.
Term
Solenoid Valves
Construction
Definition
Normally when no power is present, the gas valve is closed, and when power is applied the valve opens.
Term
Solenoid Valves
Coil
Definition
"Copper wire on a bobbin",arranged around a SOFT IRON CORE
Term
Solenoid Valves
Soft Iron Armature
Definition
Free to move up or down within the coil
Term
Solenoid Valves
Valve
Definition
Attached to SOFT IRON ARMATURE,pushed onto its seat by the RETURN SPRING when no power is present so preventing gas flow.
Term
Solenoid Valves
Return Spring
Definition
Pushes the gas valve onto its seat when no power is present.
Term
Solenoid Valves
Operating
Definition
Power is switched on,current flows through coil, generating an electromagnetic field, which overcomes force of RETURN SPRING,lifts the SOFT IRON ARMATURE up and the gas valve away from its seat, allowing gas to flow through the solenoid valve.
Term
Solenoid valve
To control gas flow electrically
Definition
Electric current, when passed through a coiled conductor, generates a magnetic field around and
inside the coil. When a solenoid valve is energised a metal armature is drawn into the core of the
coil, opening the gasway. If the electric current is switched off the armature drops back down
closing the gasway.
Examples of application include electrical thermostats and interlocks for mechanical ventilation.
