Term
Define a meteor
Definition

A meteor is a lump of rock that falls from space towards earth (a piece of asteroid or comet bits)

*You dont really need to know but...

Passing through the atmosphere causes friction and burning, making a streak of light. When it hits the earth its then called a meteorite.

Term
what is a comet?
Definition

A comet is basiclly ice and gas (Dirtysnowball)

It has a 2 tails, that always point away from the sun

Term
define Moon
Definition
The moon is a natural satellite. Theres more than 96 moons in our solar system.
Term
define asteroids
Definition
Is left-overs from when planets formed. Its a group of irregular rock objects. Most are in the asteroid belt and are 1-700 km across.
Term
Define the Earth
Definition
Is a planet that we live on. The third planet from the sun.
Term
Define Inner planets
Definition
any of the four planets closest to the sun: Mercury, Venus, the earth, or Mars
Term
Define Gas giants
Definition
planets that are mostly made out of gas.Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus,Neptune
Term
define Solstice
Definition

There are two Solstice. Winter and Summer solstice.

Winter Solstice: The day of the year that has the least amount of daylight

Summer Solstice: The day of the year with the most hours of daylight

Term
define  Equinox
Definition

Spring and Fall equinox: Results in equal hours of day and night (12 hours each)

Everywhere in the world, the sun will rise directly in the east and set directly in the west.

Term
Rotation
Definition
the movement or path of the earth or a heavenly body turning on its axis.
Term
Define revolution
Definition
the orbiting of one heavenly body around another.
Term
Define AU
Definition
An astronomical unit that is the distance from the sun to the earth. It is used to measure distances.
Term
Define a light year
Definition
The speed that light can travel in a year (300 000km/s)
Term
Define a Lunar cycle
Definition

The four main shapes of the room are Full,Cresent, quater, and Gibbious.

When the shadow of the moon is on the left its called waxing.

When the shadow is on the right it is called waning.

Term
Define Oort Cloud
Definition

Is a spherical cloud of comets believed to lie roughly nearly a light year from the sun (50 000AU)

Term
Define a Leap Year
Definition
the time taken for the Earth to complete its orbit around the Sun, 365.25 days. To account for the odd quarter day, an extra calendar day is added every four
Term
Define Ecllipse
Definition

Lunar Ecllipse:  The moon moves into earths shadow

About 2-3 per years

Solar Ecllipse: The moon moves between the Earth and the Sun

Term
Define Perihelion
Definition
the point in the orbit of a planet or comet at which it is nearest to the sun.
Term
Define aphelion
Definition
the point in the orbit of a planet or a comet at which it is farthest from the sun.
Term
Define Semimajor axis
Definition
one half the major axis
Term
At what angle is the earth axis titled?
Definition
23.5 degrees
Term

Why do we have seasons? Describe it.

Definition

The seasons are caused by the tilt of the earth along its axis.

Its hotter in the summer because the earth is tilted toward to sun.

Term
List the plants in order
Definition
Mercury, Venus, Earth,Mars,Jupiter, Saturn,Uranus,Neptune
Term
What causes the lunar ecllipse?Solar ecllipse?
Definition

Lunar: The moon moves into earth shadow, and the shadow darkens the moon

Solar: The moon moves between earth and the sun. The moon casts a shawdow on part of the earth.

Term
List, describe, and explain the stages in the life cycle of a high mass star and low mass star.
Definition

Low mass star: Nebula,Main sequence star, white dwarf, then neutron star or black hole

High mass star: Nebula, Main sequence, Redgiant,White dwarf, Supernova, then Neutron star or black hole

Term

Name and describe each phase of the moon

Definition

Full Moon -> Waxing cresent ->First Quater ->  Waxing gibbious ->Full Moon -> Wanning gibbious->Last quater->Waning Cresent->

Term
Describe the stage of our sun and what will happen to it in the future
Definition
Our sun is in its stable stage. In about 5billion years it will swell into a red giant. eventually become a white dwarf
Term
Why do oceans have tides?
Definition
Tides are created because the Earth and the moon are attracted to each other, just like magnets are attracted to each other. The moon tries to pull at anything on the Earth to bring it closer. But, the Earth is able to hold onto everything except the water. Since the water is always moving, the Earth cannot hold onto it, and the moon is able to pull at it. Each day, there are two high tides and two low tides. The ocean is constantly moving from high tide to low tide, and then back to high tide
Term
Why is hotter in the summer?
Definition
Because the tilt of the earth is closer to the sun. Not because the earth has actually moved closer to the sun.
Term
When did man land on the moon?
Definition
1969
Term
List and describe the types of galaxies. What tye of galaxy do we live in?
Definition

Spiral Galaxy: Pinwheel-shaped galaxies like our own milky way. They have a flat disk like part that is filled with stars, gas, and dust. The stars wind outward from the center in spiral arms.Sometimes there is a spherical bulge in the center

Elliptical Galaxy:  Galaxies without spiral arms. They are shaped like ellipsoids or spheres.

Irregular Galaxy:  Small galaxies that do not have a well defined shape

Term
Name and describe the most common explanation for the orgin of the universe.
Definition
God created earth. Another theory that is believed is the big bang theory. That everyone was once in something as tiny as an atom. It exploded creating all mattar.
