Cards

Term
Protons
Definition
found in nucleus, have a charge of +1, mass of 1 atomic mass unit (amu)
Term
Neutrons
Definition
found in the nucleus, have no charge as they are neutral, mass of 1.008 amu
Term
Electrons
Definition
are found in the orbit of an atom, have a charge of -1, mass of 1/1836 amu
Term
Atomic number
Definition
tells us the number of electrons and protons
Term
Mass number
Definition
tells us the number of protons and neutrons
Term
Valence electron
Definition
electrons on the outer shell/orbit
Term
Group number
Definition
tells us the number of electrons on outer shell/orbit, all elements in a group have the same number of valence electrons (electrons on the outer shell/orbit)
Term
Neutral atom
Definition
an atom with an equal number of protons and electrons, has no positive or negative charge
Term
Describe metals
Definition
• Left side of periodic table
• Silver or grey in colour
• Solid at room temperature
• Shiny
• Malleable, can be stretched
• Conducts electricity
• Has 1-3 valence electrons
• Loses electrons in bonding
• Forms positive ions
Term
Describe non-metals
Definition
• Right side of periodic table
• Colourless, red, green, yellow
• Solid liquid or gas room temp
• Dull
• Brittle, cannot be stretched
• Does not conduct electricity
• Has 4-8 valence electrons
• Gains electrons in bonding
• Forms a negative ion
Term
Compare Ionic and Covalent Compounds
Definition
Ionic – metals and non metals, electrons are transferred, solid at room temperature, high melting point, no odour, dissolves in water, conducts electricity in a solution

Covalent – non-metals, shared
electrons, liquid or gas at room temperature, low melting point, have an odour, do not dissolve in water, do not conduct electricity in a solution
Term
Synthesis reactions
Definition
has one end product, example A+B => C
Term
Decomposition reaction
Definition
has only one beginning product, example C => A+B
Term
Single Displacement reaction
Definition
one element takes the place of another element in a compound, example A+BC => AC + B
Term
Double Displacement reaction
Definition
ions from both compounds change partners, example AB+CD => AD+CB
Term
Law of Conservation of Mass
Definition
Matter cannot be created or destroyed; it can only change states during a chemical reaction
Term
Ways to increase the rate of a chemical reaction
Definition
1. Increase temperature
2. Increase concentration by decreasing surface area
3. Increase concentration by adding more reactant
Term
Ways to decrease the rate of a chemical reaction
Definition
1. Decrease temperature
2. Decrease concentration by increasing surface area
3. Decrease concentration by adding water
Term
Acids / Bases / pH
Definition
• 0-6 are acids - 7 is neutral - 8-14 are bases
• Acids react with metal to produce hydrogen
• Bases react with metal to produce hydroxide
• Acids blue litmus turns red
• Bases red litmus turns blue
Term
5 Stages of Cell Cycle
Definition
Telophase - The nuclear membrane forms and gets ready for division
Interphase - The growth and development of the cell
Prophase - The chromatids pair up; nuclear membrane dissolves & centrioles & spindle fibers go to opposite ends.
Anaphase - The chromosones separate by the spindle fibres pulling them apart.
Metaphase - The paired chromatids (chromosomes) line up in the center of the cell.
Term
Cell Membrane
Definition
controls what goes in and out of cell, plant and animal
Term
Cell Wall
Definition
protects and supports the cell, plant only
Term
Cytoplasm
Definition
supports and protects organelles, plant and animal
Term
Nucleus
Definition
contains DNA and controls cell activities, plant and animal
Term
Nucleolus
Definition
makes ribosomes, plant and animal
Term
Mitochondria
Definition
produces energy, plant and animal
Term
Chloroplasts
Definition
captures energy from food, plant only
Term
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Definition
carries substances to different parts of the cell, plant and animal
Term
Ribosomes
Definition
produces proteins, plant and animal
Term
Golgi Apparatus
Definition
distributes materials, plant and animal
Term
Central Vacuole
Definition
stores water waste and food for cell, large in plant and small in animal
Term
