Biological Causes of Sexual Dysfunction
Definition
-- Result of medical conditions (poor circulation, diabetes, etc.)

-- Hormonal levels-testosterone /estrogen imbalances

-- Vascular problems – arterial inflow disruption; blood leaking out slowly through veins

-- Diabetes – affects central and peripheral nervous systems and through vascular problems; stress from the disease may also affect sexual functioning

-- Alcohol
- 8-54% of men with alcoholism have erectile dysfunction
- 31-58% of men suffer from low desire
- Women with high blood alcohol levels have a longer latency to orgasm and decreased intensity or orgasm

4 Stages of the Sexual Response Cycle
Definition
- Appetitive (desire for sexual activity)
- Arousal (physiological arousal)
- Orgasm (involuntary muscular contractions and release of sexual tension)
- Resolution (relaxation of body after orgasm; physiologically return to normal)

Prevalence of Paraphilias
Definition
- People with these disorders are primarily, and almost exclusively male
- žSome behaviors/fantasies associated with Paraphilias may begin in childhood/early adolescence; More pronounced during adolescence and adulthood
- žCourse is often chronic and lifelong, but fantasies and behaviors diminish with advancing age.
- žOther than sex offenders, most people with Paraphilias do not seek treatment

- Fetishism: sexual attraction and fantasies involving nonliving objects such as female undergarments
- Transvestic Fetishism: Intense sexual arousal by cross-dressing
- Autogynephilia: characterized by a man’s sexual arousal at the thought of being a woman

Definition
- Exhibitionism: urges, acts, or fantasies involving exposure of genitals to a stranger
- Voyeurism: urges, acts, or fantasies of observing an unsuspecting person disrobing or engaging in sexual activity
- Frotteurism: urges, acts, or fantasies of touching or rubbing against a non-consenting person
- Pedophilia: urges, acts, or fantasies involving sexual contact with a pre-pubescent child

- Psycho-education for “normal” sexual practices
- Cognitive Therapy: determine the onset of the Paraphilia and it’s causal factors; restructure their thoughts about sexual practices and the behavior in question
- Behavioral Therapy: pair the behavioral focus with contrary stimuli; systematic Desensitization

Person experiences strong and persistent cross-gender identification; assume the identity of the desired sex, but the goal is not sexual

- Gender dysphoria: persistent discomfort about one’s biological sex or the sense that the gender role of that sex is inappropriate
