Term

Xylem

Definition

Structure - cells are dead at maturity

Function  - transporting water and minerals from roots

Transporation-cohesion or cohesion-tension - explains that transpiration, cohesion (water sticking to water) and adhesion (water sticking to xylem walls) all act to move water to the tops of trees

Term

Phloem

Definition

Structure - cells are alive at maturity

Function  - transporting sugar resolution from source to sink (high to low concentration)

Pressure flow theory - explains the movement of carbohydrates nutrients in plants. When sugar is made, it is actevly transported into phloem cells. Water then moves into the phloem cells by osmosis, which increases the turgor pressure.

Term

Atria

Definition

These push blood into the ventricoles.

Term

Ventricles

Definition

these pump the blood to the lungs and body.

Term

Valves

Definition

these prevent backflow of blood and are located between the atria and ventricles and also between the ventricles and the blood vessels (arteries) through which blood flows away from the heart
