Term
pollution
Definition
an alteration to the environment that will cause harm
Term
three types of pesticides
Definition
herbicides - plants insectisides - insects fungisides - fungus
Term
sanitary landfills
Definition
a landfill with a waterproof liner filled with compacted garbage covered earth
Term
secure landfills
Definition
a specialized landfill that safely contains hazardous and toxic waste.
Term
whats the treatment process
Definition
take out solids settling tank to allow big particles to settle large tank with bacteria treat with chemical to kill off pathogens gets released
Term
leachate
Definition
liquid that results as wastes decompose and rain water filters through
Term
catalytic converter
Definition
carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide are produced by the car engine. it converts harmful nitrogen gaese to CO2 and H20 which become the only emissions
Term
scrubbers
Definition
when somehting at a factory burns the emmision will contain nitrogen oxides, carbon oxides, and sulfur oxides. Scrubbers spray a liquid sorbent and when they combine with the oxides the chemical reaction will result in a solid the emissions then have no nitrogyn or sulfur oxides
Term
what does algae growth cause
Definition
makes the water cloudy and reduces oxygen content
Term
algal bloom process
Definition
Lots of nitrates in the water shows that there is decomposition happening. Algae growth skyrockets. This is often because of excess phosphates and nitrates (from sewage and agricultural run-off). Eventually, the algae dies, and decomposition of the algae leads to low oxygen levels. This may lead to death or injury to aquatic animals. The excess algae also cause the water to warm up because when the sun hits the algae it traps the heat causing lower oxygen levels.
Term
4 indicators of water quality
Definition
dissolved oxygen
phosphorus and nitrogen
ph
pesticides
Term
parts per million (ppm)
Definition
oen unit of chemical is found in one million units of solution
Term
how to calculate ppm
Definition
mg solute / kg solution
Term
how to do ppm for liquid
Definition
1kg = 1L
Term
Acids
Definition
ph lower than 7
tastes sour
Term
Bases
Definition
ph greater than 7 tastes bitter
soapy texture
Term
Neutral
Definition
ph equal to 7
Term
What happens when litmus paper comes in contact with an acid vs a base
Definition
acid - turns red
base - turns blue
Term
Neutralization
Definition
when an acid and base are mixed the result is salt water which is neutral
Term
Liming
Definition
treating lakes with lime to neutralize the effects of acid rain
Term
how can pollutants transport
Definition
air - can be affected by wind and rain
water - ground water + surface water
soil - runoff soaks into soil
Term
biodegradation
Definition
pollutants are broken down into inorganic substances
Term
biomagnification
Definition
accummulation of hazardous materials and increase in concentration as they move up the food chain
Term
LD50
Definition
lethal dose that would kill 50% of the population
Term
Nutrients
Definition
a chemical found in food used for energy, growth, bodybuilding, or cell repair
Term
carbohydrates
Definition
organic nutrient made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen
Term
proteins
Definition
organic nutrient composed of a chain of amino acids
build and repair tissues
Term
lipids
Definition
organic nutrient
storage of unused energy
Term
vitamins
Definition
large molecules that help enzymes function
required to live
Term
macro mineral
Definition
minerals that you need larger amounts of to live
Term
trace element
Definition
you need less than 100 mg / day
Term
DDT
Definition
an effective pesticide but through biomagnification started harming animals near the top of the food chain like birds
Term
Indicator

Definition
rain or snow containing acid compounds from the air
Term
sorbent
Definition
a substance that reacts with nitrogen and sulphur oxides in scrubbers to form a sludge-like solid
Term
toxicity
Definition
the ability of a chemical to cause harm to an organism
Term
acute toxicity
Definition
the ability of a chemical to cause harm to an organism with only one exposure
Term
non persistent pollutant
Definition
a pollutant that can be broken down
Term
persistant pollutant
Definition
a pollutant that is very difficult to or cannot be broken down
Term
phosphates
Definition
used in fertilizers + water pollution when present it encourages algal blooms

Definition
oxygen dissolved in water
essential to good quality water
Term
point source
Definition
a specific location that can be identified where pollution originates
Term
