Term
How does fMRI work?
Definition
Measured changes in blood flow in the brain. (Areas working require more blood)
Advantages are that it gives a low exposure and shows live responces.
Term
How does MRI work?
Definition
Produces an electromagnetic field that resonates water molecules in the body.
Can create lots of "cross section" images.
Not thought to expose patients to harmful radiation.
Term
What is PVS?
Definition
Persistant vegetative state: a lower form of conciousness where a person is not aware or their surroundings, even though they respond to basic stimuli (light) and have sleep/wake cycles.
Term
What does the brain stem do?
Definition
controls reflexes, unconcious functinons such as breathing, heart beat, digestion, recieving incoming stimuli.
Term
What does the cerebral cortex do?
Definition
Control thinking, memory, language and voluntary movement. The cortex is larger in humans than in other animals.
Term
True or false - several brain regions are often involved in a single thought process.
Definition
True - different regions process signals from different parts of the body, and so many regions can be involved in a single action.
Term
Activity in an area of the brain can lead to changes in that area which can be detected by intruments. Name some.
Definition
Increased blood flow, increased elecrical activity, increased demand for energy.
Term
Define conciousness.
Definition
Being aware of ones enviroment and onces relationship to it.
Term
Define Death.
(Loss of mortality, not Discworld character :-P )
Definition
Irreversable loss of heart function or all brain function. But it's not so easy to tell with modern technology (eg. life support)
Term
Name the electromagnetic specturm. Double points if it's in order or wavelength (longest to shortest)
Definition
Radio, Microwave, Infared, Visible, Ultraviolet UV, X-ray, Gamma.

Radio Manchester interviews vicious undergradutes (and) xenophobic grannies.
Term
True or false - electromagnetic radiation can move through a vaccuum.
Definition
True.
