EARTH'S BIOMES

BIOME

Definition

* A large geographical region with a particular range of temperature & precipitation levels & the plants & animals adapted to those climate conditions

A biome is a community of plants and animals that have common characteristics for the environment they exist in. They can be found over a range of continents. Biomes are distinct biological communities that have formed in response to a shared physical climate

CLOSED SYSTEM

Definition

* Any system that exchanges energy with its surroundings but does not exchange matter

A closed system is a physical system that does not allow certain types of transfers, though the transfer of energy is allowed

OPEN SYSTEM

Definition

* Any system that exchanges both matter & energy with its surroundings

A perfect example of an open system is a living organism such as a human being. We actively interact with our environment, which results in changes to both the environment and us. For example, we eat to acquire energy. We are subject to the sun's radiation and the climate of our planet

PRAIRIE

Definition

* A subtype of the grassland biome found in North America

*Prairies have a cooler average temperature that savannas (the other subtype of the grassland biome)

BIOMES

Definition

* Alberta has 2 biomes

* Earth's entire terrestrial biosphere is divided into 6 biomes:

1) Tundra   2) Rain Forest   3) Grassland

4) Deciduous Forest  5) Taiga  6) Desert

(Taiga, generally referred to in North America as boreal forest or snow forest, is a biome characterized by coniferous forests consisting mostly of pines, spruces, and larches)

SAVANNA

Definition

* A subtype of the grassland biome found in Africa, Central America & Australia

*Savannas have distinct wet & dry seasons & a warmer average temperature than prairies (the other subtype of the grassland biome)

SURROUNDINGS

Definition

* Everything outside of a system

Surroundings are the area around a given physical or geographical point or place. The exact definition depends on the field. Often, the simplifying assumptions are that energy and matter may move freely within the surroundings, and that the surroundings have a uniform composition

SYSTEM

Definition

* A set of interconnected parts & an associated region containing these parts

* system is a set of parts that work together to achieve a particular, more complex goal
