HEAT AND

THERMAL ENERGY

Definition

The terms heat and thermal energy are closely related, but they are not synonymous to scientists. Thermal energy is the preferred scientific term for energy possessed by a substance due to kinetic energy of its molecules and atoms. Scientists reserve the term heat for reference to the transfer of thermal energy.

e.g., steam turbine, iron, furnace, toaster

Term

FORMS OF ENERGY

HEAT ENGINE

Definition

* A device that converts heat into mechanical energy

(Technologies such as airplane and cars, involve a heat engine, which converts heat from the combustion of fuel, into mechanical energy. But no matter how efficient these technologies are, they give off some waste thermal energy)
