Term
Visible Light Waves
Definition
The wave that is also a particle, its speed, about three hundred million meters per second, is a universal constant, for all electromagnetic waves.
Term
Gamma Rays
Definition
The wave with the highest frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum, unless you count killing others useful, it has no practical use, and is very dangerous.
Term
X-Rays
Definition
The wave with the second highest frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum, it has one or two uses; looking a bones without cuting someone open, and looking at space. They are helpful in medical use, but can cause cancer.
Term
Ultraviolet Waves
Definition
The wave that has a slightly smaller wavelength than violet light, the sun emits it as three types; UVA, UVB, and UVC.
Term
Infra-red Waves
Definition
The wave that has a slightly longer wavelength than red light, it is felt as heat.
Term
Microwaves
Definition
The wave that is used in your microwave, it is not felt, but heats up water molecules in your food, so technically, if your food doesn't have any water, it won't heat up.
Term
Radio Waves
Definition
The wave that is most common and useful, it has the longest wavelength, and the most uses. AM and FM, and now even XM radio waves transmit sound. Cellular waves do the same. TV waves transfer both sound and picture.
Term
Fiber Optic Cables
Definition
Cables that can transfer light particles, is mainly used for landlines and internet.
Term
Wave
Definition
It is a rhythmic disturbance that carries energy, but no matter.
Term
Mechanical Wave
Definition
A wave that requires matter, called a medium, to move energy, such as sound.
Term
Transverse Wave
Definition
A wave in which the medium moves up and down at right angles to the wave.
Term
Compressional Wave
Definition
A wave in which the medium moves back and forth with the wave.
Term
Electromagnetic Wave
Definition
A wave that does not require matter to move energy.
Term
Wavelength
Definition
The distance from crest to crest, trough to trough, compression to compression, or rarefaction to rarefaction.
Term
Frequency
Definition
The number of wavelengths that pass a given point in one second.
