Term
Nonprobability Sampling
Definition
Sampling that does not involve random selection.
Term
Accidental,Haphazard, or Convenience Sampling
Definition
One of the most common methods of sampling. (See Pg. 41.
Term
Purposive Sampling
Definition
you sample with a purpose in mind. Usually you would be seeking one ormore specific predefined groups. For instance, people in mall carrying clipboards are targeting specific people. pg. 41
Term
Modal Instance Sampling
(Subcatagory of Purposive Sampling)
Definition
you are sampling the most frequent case,or the typical case. Many informal public opinion polls, for instance, interview a typical voter.
Term
Expert Sampling
(Subcatagory of Purposive Sampling)
Definition
involves the assembling of a sample of persons with known or demonstrable experience and expertise in some area. A common example is a panel of experts.
Term
Quota Sampling
(Subcatagory of Purposive Sampling)
Definition
You select people nonramdomy according to some fixed quota. The two types of quota samping are proportional and nonproportional. In proproportional quota sampling, you want ot represent the majory characteristics of the populaiton by sampling a proportional amount of each (pg. 42).

Nonproportional Quota Sampling is less restrictive. you specify the minimumnumber of sampled units you wan tin ach category. Here, you are not concerned with having numbers that match the proportions in the population. Instead, you simply want to have enough to assure that you will be able to talk about even small groups in the population. This method is similar to stratified random sampling in that it is typically used to assure that smaller groups are adequately reprsented in your sample.
Term
Heterogeneity Sampling
(Subcatagory of Purposive Sampling)
Definition
when you want to incluide all opinions or views, and you aren't concerned aobut representing these views proportionately. Another term for his is samplng for diversity.
Term
Snowball Sampling
(Subcatagory of Purposive Sampling)
Definition
you begin by identifying people who meet the criteria for inclusion in your study. You then ask them to recommend others they know who also meet the criteria.
