Term
Steven-Johnson's Syndrome
Definition

In Asians:

- HLA-B*15:02 in presence of carbamazepine/phenytoin leads to SJS

In Northern Europeans/Asians:

- HLA-B*58:01 in presence of allopurinol leads to SJS

Term
Transfusion related acute lung injury (TRALI)
Definition

Antibodies from donor bind WBC of the recipient and form a complex that clogs the pulmonary vasculature resulting in vascular permeability and pulmonary edema leading to fluid and protein in the alveoli

Symptoms include rapid onset of:

- dyspnea

- cyanosis

- hypotension

- Fever

- Chills

- Pulmonary edema

Term
Platelet refractory patients
Definition

Platelets express HLA class 1 which recipient can have antibodies for leading to the destruction of platelets (refractory disease)

To avoid this, you must match HLA/HLP-1 platelets to the recipient to avoid this
