George Washington

Born: February 22, 1732
Died: December 14, 1799

Known as one of the founding fathers of the United States. Was an important leader and general in the army that fought the British and was the first President of the United States. He was the commander of the Continental Army and led the United States to their freedom from Great Britain.

Patrick Henry is best known for his "Give me liberty or give me death!" speech. He is known as a founding father of the United States and was a delegate at both the First and Second Continental Congresses.

Deborah Sampson disguised herself as a man to serve in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. She was wounded and honorably discharged. She was one of only a handful of women whose military experience was documented.

She was the wife of second president, John Adams. She is sometimes also considered one of the founders of the United States. She was the second First Lady and first Second Lady as her husband and son were elected President. She is known for the many letters she wrote John Adams during the Continental Congress.

Died: July 4, 1826, Quincy, MA

Second President of the United States. Considered a founding father. He was a leader in the movement for independence from Great Britain. He assisted Jefferson in writing the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

First casualty of the American Revolution when he was killed during the Boston Massacre. Some say he was a runaway slave but he could have also been a free man. He was an icon for the anti-slavery movement and seen as a martyr of the Revolution.

He was a general during the American Revolution. He was seen as a traitor for defecting to the British Army. Today people use his name as a term for traitor.

Benjamin Franklin was the oldest figure of the American Revolution, but he did a lot of other things, too. He was an inventor and is best known for his experiments with electricity. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Samuel Adams was a statesman and politician. He is well known for his part in the Boston Tea Party. He and the Sons of Liberty snuck onto three British ships and threw 342 cases of tea overboard in protest of the Stamp Act.

Paine was an English-American author and political critic who influenced the American Revolution. His pamphlet "Common Sense" called for independence from England and the establishment of a democratic government. This publication persuaded American colonists to support and fight in the American Revolution.
