Gospel of Mark
Definition

the Winged Lion

Mark starts with the beginning of Jesus’ mature ministry, post baptism by John the Baptist. Jesus’ ministry in Galilee, proclaimed kingdom of God is at his hand-reputation as healer spreads. Jesus got in trouble for healing and picking grain on day of rest, challenged the Sabbath law—“Sabbath is for people; People aren’t for Sabbath”. As Jesus celebrated Passover he was betrayed by one of his disciples (Judah). He was arrested, brought to trial before Pilate-Jesus doesn’t deny that he is the king of the Jews and offers no offence and was then executed on cross. Jesus’ body is place in tomb before Sabbath begins and is sealed with a stone. The day after Sabbath, 3 women followers who were going to anoint the body found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. A figure appears to them and says Jesus has risen from the dead and will meet with disciples

Gospel of Matthew
Definition

Winged Angel

Matthew wanted to persuade Jewish audience of Jesus being the Messiah. Matthew claimed that after King Herod heard of the news of the birth of a child that was to be king of the Jews, King Herod plotted to kill every Jewish infant born to protect his own reign. An angel warns Joseph and Mary to take the child and escape to Egypt. Matthew traced Jesus’ genealogy as descendent of King David in lineage that runs through Joseph but later said that Mary was already pregnant with Jesus before her marriage to Joseph, as she was impregnated by the Holy Spirit. Matthew made this claim to associate Jesus’ birth with prophecy from book of Isaiah (7:14). Matthew and Luke are only sources for doctrine of the virgin birth

Term
Gospel of Luke
Definition

Winged Ox

Luke claims Jesus would have appealed to gentiles as well as Jews and presents his Jewish saviour as being important to the gentile world. Luke details events before Jesus’ adult baptism and ministry as well as Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem.Luke’s incorporations of hymns used in the early Church serve to strengthen the case that Jesus was the long-awaited messiah. Luke believed that signs and portents were most important evidence of Jesus’ special role. Lukes’ account is different from Mark’s account in that Luke emphasises that Jesus was born into his role and destined for it whereas Mark account’s Jesus as having embarked on his ministry following an adult decision marked by baptism. Also different from Mark is Luke providing more information on the trial and crucifixion of Jesus. In Luke’s narrative, charge against Jesus was claiming kingship which was seen as inciting rebellion. Pilate found Jesus to be innocent but succumbs to mob pressure (also different from Mark). After the crucifixion in Luke, the Roman centurion who witnessed it said that Jesus was innocent rather than that Jesus was the son of God(as in Mark).

Term
Gospel of John
Definition

Not “synoptic gospels” like the first three-Matthew, Mark, Luke-first three share a lot in common when contrasted with John.“Synoptic”=viewing together/unified perspective or viewpoint. Johns’ purpose is to set not just narrative but also cosmic significance. John proclaims Jesus’ identity as messiah and saviour. John correlates Jesus to logos meaning ‘Word’-- whole idea of divine intelligence and purpose. Declares Jesus to be the incarnation of the divide Word. The eternal divine purpose presence is in human form. Difference between Mark and John’s Jesus is that Mark’s Jesus does not confirm or deny he is the long-awaited king whilst John’s Jesus does so. In John’s gospel, Jesus declares himself to be the means of salvation in passages that begin with ‘I am’-definitive link between God and humanity. Our salvation is John’s goal for humans-he believes we all need to be delivered from flaws and constraints of our condition and is concerned with our morality
