Moses is said to have encountered God in the form of a burning bush where he was told to return to Egypt and liberate the people of Israel. Moses returns and God sends ten plagues upon the Egyptians until the pharaoh lets the Israelites go. The people of Israel spend forty years in the desert on the way to the Promise Land of Canaan. On the way, God spoke to Moses and gave him the Ten Commandments on top of Mount Horeb. These serve as instructions for the Israelites on principles relating to ethics and their worship, setting up moral standards. These ten laws served as the basis for all other commandments. However, because the Israelites did not follow obey the commandments or trust God, they were forced to walk in the wilderness until almost all people of that generation, including Moses had died. Then, under the leadership of Joshua they entered into Canaan. (taken from study guide)
