Definition
Origin: Some foreign substance that blocks blood flow in the pulmonary system

Matter that Causes: tumor, fat, bone, air, throbus, etc

Risk factors: age, smoking, surgery, immobility, fractures of long bones, vaginal delivery

S/S: SUDDEN Dyspnea, pleuretic chestpain, tachycardia, Cough

TX Goals: Keep O2 stat up!
Blood thinners
*Heparin & Coumadin= heparin- short term, apTT 1.5-2.5, 3-5
days

Coumadin- longer term start day 3ish-
level btwn 2-3, watch INR w/coumadin

Definition
ARDS the build up of fluid in your aveioli this makes it hard for your lungs to perform adequate oxygen exchange-that makes it hard to breathe

Fluid, protien, inflammatory cells- fill the air spaces

Subtle dyspnea/tachypnea, critical time for EARLY TX, cyanosis, course bilateral crackles

INCREASED EDEMA OF LUNG- SOB, fast heart rate, course crackles-

resistant to O2 (you keep giving more O2 but they do not respond)-

watch for Increased wbc count, BP, Fever, micro-emboli, MODS
