Term
Robot
Definition

Computer-controlled machines designed to perform specific manual tasks.

A robot's central processor might be a microprocessor embedded in the robot's shell or it might be a supervisory computer that controls from a distance. A robot sends commands to joints and arms rather than simply sending output to a screen.

Examples are iRobot's Roomba which can vacuum floors on its own and Honda's ASIMO which conducted a performance of the Detroit Symphony.

Term
Android
Definition

A robot or synthetic organism designed to look and act like a human.

They are created to a resemble a human but technology is used to control them.Until recently, androids have remained largely in the realm of science fiction.

Examples of androids include DER 01, EveR-1 (capable of emulating human emotional expressions), and EveR-2 (capable of singing).

Term
Cyborg
Definition

Also known as a cybernetic organism, is a being with both biological and artificial parts. It is any organism that has biological as well as artificial aspects.

An example is a human who has certain physiological processes aided or controlled by mechanical or electronic devices, such as a hearing aid. An other example is an insect which has a sensor implanted in it so that it can monitor a certain area.

Term
Sensors
Definition

Devices that enable digital machines to monitor a physical quantity of the analog world, such as a temperature, humidity, or pressure, to provide data used in robotics, environmental climate control, and other applications.

These sensing devices enable robots to correct or modify their actions based on feedback from the outside world.

Examples are microphones, biochip, SONAR, and video sensor.
