Term
Why do we image the spine?
Definition

- Patients who experience trauma

- Patients who complain of pain

- Patients who experience a disturbance in sensation or movement

- Patients who may have a malignancy

Term
Imagin Modalities of Cervical Spine
Definition

- Plain films: good for anything

- CT scan: good for fracture delineation, tumors

- MRI scan: good for soft tissue, tumors and herniated discs

Term

Views of Cervical Spine

(5)

Definition

- Lateral view

- Swimmer's view

- Closed mouth A/P view

- Open mouth or odontoid view

- Bilateral obliques view

Term
What to look for on the lateral view of the Cervical Spine
Definition

1. Count vertebral bodies

2. Alignment

3. Cervical curvature

4. Prevertebral soft tissue thickness

5. Widening between spinous processes

6. Facets

7. Predental space

Term
What are the 4 lines to assess on the Cervical Spin?
Definition

- Anterior Vertebral Line

- Posterior Vertebral Line

- Spino-Laminar Line

- Posterior Spinous Line

Term

Distance from the posterior aspect of the anterior arch of C1 to the most anterior portion of the odontoid (or predental space)

Adults-

Children-

Definition

Adults: should not exceed 3 mm

Children: should not exceed 8 mm

Term
Importance of Swimmer's View of the Cervical Spine
Definition
Helpful view to facilitate seeing ALL 7 vertebrae
Term
What to look for on the AP view of the Cervical Spine
Definition

1. Alignment

2. Oblique fractures

Term
What to look for on the Open mouth or Odontoid view of the Cervical Spine
Definition

1. Widening of lateral parts of C1 relative to C2

2. Alignment of lateral margins and spinous processes

3. Fracture lines

Term

What to look for on the Oblique view of the Cervical Spine

Definition

1. Neural foraminal narrowing

2. Alignment of facet joints

Term
Thoracic Spine
Definition

- Difficult to see detail due to superimposed structures on radiographs

- CT is needed for osseous structures

- MRI helpful for soft tissue

Term
Lumber Spine Imaging Modalities
Definition

- Initial Radiographs: AP, Lateral, Obliques, and Lateral sacral views

- CT: good for disc abnormality, boney abnormality

- MRI: better for disc abnormality, bone contusion and ligamentous injury

Term
Anatomic Counterparts of the Scotty Dog on the Lumbar Spine
Definition

Eye - Pedicle

Nose - Transverse Process

Ear - Superior Articular Process

Foreleg - Inferior Articular Process

Body - Lamina
