Term

The only 3 reasons to enter an auto:

Definition

1. engine failure.

2. loss of tail rotor effectiveness at altitude.

3. fire in flight.

Term

Power failure above 500ft:

Definition

1. lower collective immediately.

2. establish a steady glide speed at 65 knots.

3. adjust collective to keep the RPMs above 97%.

4. select landing spot and try to land into the wind.

an air restart can be attempted if high enough.

if unable to restart turn off all unnecessary switches and shut off fuel.

5. about 40ft start flare to reduce airspeed and rate of decent.

6. about 8ft forward cyclic to level out.

7. pull up collective before touchdown to cushion landing.

Term

Power failure below 500ft:

Definition

1. lower collective immediately.

2. adjust collective to keep the RPMs above 97%.

3. maintain airspeed until ground is approached, begin cyclic flare.

4. about 8ft apply forward cyclic to level out and raise collective just before touchdown.

Term

Power failure below 8ft:

Definition

1. apply right pedal to prevent yaw(spin).

2. allow aircraft to settle and then.

3. raise collective to cushion landing.

Term

Air restart:

Definition

1. mixture full rich.

2. primer down and locked (if installed).

3. throttle closed, then cracked slightly.

4. start with left hand.

Term

Ditching power off:

Definition

1. perform autorotation landing to the water.

2. pull up collective before contacting water.

3. apply lateral cyclic when aircraft contacts the water to stop the blades from spinning.

4. when the blades stop spinning exit aircraft.

Term

Ditching power on:

Definition

1. hover above water.

2. let out passengers.

3. fly to a safe distance.

4. switch off batt. and alternator.

5. roll throttle into over travel spring.

6. keep aircraft level, pull collective just before contacting the water.

7. apply left lateral cyclic to stop blades from spinning.

8. exit the aircraft.

Term

Loss of tail rotor thrust in forward flight:

Definition

1. indicated by right yaw (spin) that cannot be corrected by left pedal.

2. enter an autorotation.

3. keep 70 knots airspeed.

4. select landing spot, roll off throttle into over travel spring and perform and autorotation landing.

Term

Loss of tail rotor thrust in hover:

Definition

1. indicated by right yaw (spin) that cannot be corrected by left pedal.

2. roll throttle into over travel spring, allow aircraft to settle.

3. raise collective just before touchdown to cushion landing.

Term

Engine fire during start-up:

Definition

1. continue cracking to attempt to suck the flames into the engine.

2. if engine starts, run at 50-60% RPM for a short time, then shut down.

3. if engine fails to start shut off fuel and master battery.

4. extinguish fire.

Term

Fire in flight:

Definition

1. enter an autorotation.

2. master battery OFF.

3. cabin heat OFF.

4. cabin vent ON.

5. if engine is running perform normal landing and immediately shut off fuel.

6. if engine quits shut off fuel and perform autorotation landing

Term

Electrical fire in flight:

Definition

1. master battery OFF.

2. alternator OFF.

3. land immediately.

Term
If oil light comes on
Definition

indicates loss of engine power or oil pressure. check engine tachometer for power loss. check oil pressure gage, and if pressure is lost, land immediately.

Term

M R. temp

Definition

indicates high temp of main rotor gearbox.

Term
M R. chip
Definition

indicates medal in the main rotor gear box.

Term
T R. chip
Definition

indicates medal in the tail rotor gear box.

Term

MR temp

MR chip

TR chip

Definition

If the TR and MR's are accompanied by noise, vibrations, temperature rise, or more than one light on. land immediately. if there are no other indications land as soon as practical.

Term

If clutch light comes on during flight

Definition
If light is on longer than 10 seconds or flickers, pull the clutch circuit breaker and land as soon as practical. be prepared to do an autorotation landing.
Term

If alternator light comes on

Definition

indicates low voltage and possible alternator failure. turn off unnecessary electrical equipment and switch alternator off and back on to attempt to reset. if light stays on land as soon as practical.
