Term
What happens after germination?
Definition

Shoot apex changes in size and shape from seedling to adult

Leaf primordium arise on the flank of the tall shoot apex as a horizontal ridge that expands laterally both ways until it has more than encircled the node

Term
How are leaves produced?
Definition
Longitudinal bundles will intiate as isolated strands, first at the base of the leaf and then upward into leaf, finally downward into node
Term
What are 3 components of wheat yield?
Definition

Tillers per m2

# of grains per tiller

grain weight

Term
Explain tiller initiation
Definition

Buds form at axils of most leaves

Bud forms a prophyll, similar to coleoptile

Tiller buds make early vascular conections with node bundles and have a vascular system to whole axis

Term
What is the Double Ridge?
Definition

Transition from vegetative to reproductive stage

1 ridge is targeted to become a flower and the lower ridge is produces a leaf

more primodium are produced (use fertilizer)

Term
What does Meristematic activity do?
Definition
Within the node, it produces growth of the internode (results in elongation of internode)
Term
Explain the wheat stem
Definition

Several sections, and each section has a leaf

The leaf is joined at the stemm by a node and internode

Stem is fully elongated at anthesis

Term
What happens at Anthesis?
Definition

Anthers release pollen

Pollen carries male gametes and goes from anther to stigma

4 microspores are produced

The carpel of wheat has 1 ovule and 2 styles with stigma branches. Only 1 megaspore mother cell that develops into megagametophyte

Term

How are florets forced open?

How long are stigmas receptive for?

Definition

By the swelling of the Iodicules

4-14 days, but pollen is only viable for 15-20 minutes

Term
What attracts pollen to the stigma?
Definition
Electrostatic force and water absorption
Term
Explain pollen germination
Definition

Pollen tube penetrates stigma and grows towards embryo sac

One sperm cell nucleus enters egg cell and fuses to produce the zygote. Other sperm cells fuses to initiate endosperm

Term
How are photosynthates paritioned?
Definition

Vegetative Development - photosynthate goes to leaves, tillers and roots

Intermediate development - goes to nodes and stem elongating

Spike Growth - goes to upper 2 or 3 leaves

Flag leaf - accounts for 50% of photosynthate from early to mid-grain fill

Term
What is Rh1 and Rh2?
Definition

genees for reducing plant height

Cause yield increase because more dry matter was partitioned into the grain

Term
How do you calculate harvest index?
Definition
(Grain yield/above ground biomass) x 100
