Definition

a harmful disfunction in which behavior is judged to be atypical, disturbing, maladaptive, and unjustifiable

-It is not enough for a behavior to be atypical (unusual) to be considered a

disorder

Definition

 characterized by distressing, persistent anxiety or 

maladaptive behaviors that reduces anxiety 

-Beyond normal uneasiness in stressful situations

-Person is continually tense and apprehensive 

-Tied to no specific threat 

-“Free-floating anxiety” 

-Often trembling, perspiring, fidgeting, dizzy and suffers from diarrhea 

-Often worry over every little decision

-Sudden attacks of overwhelming anxiety 

-Minutes of intense dread, terror, chest pains 

-Person often thinks having a heart attack 

-After several of these attacks people often will develop panic disorder 

-They fear the fear itself 

-Will avoid situations that can trigger the fear 

-Often decrease their social contacts and how fare they go away from home

During a period of at least 2 weeks, five or more of the following symptoms 

have occurred and represent a change in functioning 

 

-Depressed mood most of the day, almost daily (based on subjective report or 

observations of others) 

 

-Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in nearly all daily activities (based on 

subjective or objective reports) 

 

-Significant weight loss, not through dieting 

 

-Daily insomnia or hypersomnia (sleeping a lot) 

 

-Daily psychomotor agitation (intense restlessness) or retardation (physical 

sluggishness) 

 

-Daily fatigue, or loss of energy 

 

-Almost daily feelings of worthlessness, or inappropriate or excessive guilt 

 

-Almost daily diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness 

(based on subjective or objective reports) 

 

-Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide with or without a specific plan

-Depression 

-Manic episodes: a period of at least one week during which an abnormally 

elevated, expansive, or irritable mood persists 

-Can result in spending sprees, unwise investments, and unsafe sex 

-Little need for sleep 

-Speech is loud, flighty, and difficult to interrupt 

-Some explanations of mood disorders: 

-Genetic predisposition 

-Neurotransmitter changes 

-During mania, an overabundance of norepinephrine 

-An arousing neurotransmitter 

-During depression, a scarcity of norepinephrine and serotonin

Schizophrenia
Definition

-Affects about 1% of people 

-Onset is usually in late adolescence or early adulthood 

-Greek word schizo means “split” or “to cut” 

-But it is NOT a split personality 

-The split is with reality that shows itself in several ways: 

 

-Disorganized and delusional thinking 

-Delusions: false thoughts maintained even though clearly wrong or 

demonstrated wrong 

-Fragmented thinking 

-Jump from one topic to another 

-Disturbed perceptions 

-Hallucinations often occur 

-Hallucinations: sensory experiences without stimulation 

-Usually auditory 

-May think God is speaking to them 

-May think the government is beaming thoughts into their heads 

-Sometimes have a running commentary on their lives 

-“You’re an idiot to shake his hand.” 

-“You don’t need a bath.” 

 

-Inappropriate emotions and actions 

-E.g., Person might laugh when told his or her mother died 

-Personal hygiene often is not maintained 

-Social relations usually suffer greatly 

-Work suffers, often loses job 

 

-Symptoms can be classified into positive and negative 

-Not positive as good, and negative as bad 

-Positive symptoms: an excess or distortion of normal functions 

-E.g., delusions, hallucinations, disordered behavior, disorganized speech 

-Negative symptoms: a diminution or loss of normal functions 

-E.g., absence of emotions; brief, slow replies to questions, don’t initiate goal- 

directed behavior
