shown to either worsen symptoms or have no effect at all y:

  • Premature exposure to traumatic memories may interfere with the “natural” recovery process that leads to traumatic material being consolidated and fading from consciousness
  • Interferes with habituation and cognitive changes necessary for recovery
  • Early focus on symptoms may lead to negative thoughts about oneself such as “why am I not better by now?”
  • Excessive posttraumatic adrenergic activity facilitates encoding of traumatic memories thereby facilitating the development of ptsd
