Maturational Crisis
Definition
entry into a new developmental stage. Formaly used coping skills are not appropiate, new coping skills have yet to be developed. The client is without effective developmental coping skills. This leads to an increase in anxiety and variations of the normal behavior.

Definition
Arises from an external rather than internal sourse. Loss of job or loved one, abortion, change of job or financial status. Referred to as critical life problems.

Definition
Person confronted by crisis that threatens the self-concept responds with anxiety.
Stimulates use of problem solving mechanisms and defense mechanisms to solve the problem andreduce anxiety

Usual defense mechanism fails, continued threat causes increased anxiety and extreme discomfort.
Functioning becomes disorganized, trial and error kicks in to attempt to solve

1- crisis is self limiting, usually 4-6 weeks.
2- resolution results in 1 of three levels 1)higher level of fxning, 2) same level of fxning, or 3) lower level of fxning.
3-goal of crisis intervention is to return the individual to previous fxning state
4-forms of resolutions depends on clinet's actions and interventions by others.
5-clients aremore open to help during a crisis.
6-client in a crisis situation is assumed to be mentlly healthy and has fxned well in the past.
7-Crisis interventions deals with the present problem / crisis of the client.
8- nurse must be willing to take an active and directive role in interventions.
9-early intervention increases chance of good prognosis.
10- client is encouraged to set realistic plans and goals focusing on current situation

the nurses initial task is to assess the individuals and the problem. The more clearly the problem can be defined, the better the chance that an effective olution will be found.
