Term
Episodic Memory
Definition
Episodic (Tulving)
event or episode, personal experience
Term
Semantic Memory
Definition
Semantic (Tulving)

general knowledge, facts, concepts, ideas
Term
Memory Systems
Definition
The distinction between episodic and semantic memory
Term
What is the difference in retrieval of memory from the two systems?
Definition

Episodic is temporal where it is a question of when.

Semantic is more of a question of what and comes from a general knowledge base. It also has to do with the meaning and its relationship to other knowledge.

Term
Schacter (1996)
Definition
He uses amnesia as an example of how the two systems are separate.  With amnesia you retain the semantic system while losing parts of the episodic.
Term
lexicons
Definition

mental dictionaries

Term
Cognitive Economy
Definition
Properties and facts stored at the highest level.
Term
Semantic Network
Definition
It is the idea that knowledge is like a web of interconnected information.  A node or piece of information connects by pointers.
Term
Superordinate Node
Definition
The higher node on the hierarchy of semantic knowledge.
Term
Subordinate Node
Definition
The more detailed or lower node on the hierarchy.
Term
Collins and Quillan (1969)
Definition
They came up with the Hierarchial Semantic Network Model of Smantic Memory.  They theorized the farther away a node is then the longer it will take to recognize, identify, or verify.
Term
Conflicting results of Hierarchy for Sematic Memory
Definition
same action at different levels: problem of cognitive economy-
“a shark can move”, “a fish can move”, or “an animal can move”

problem of hierarchy-
“a pig is an animal” vs. “a pig is a mammal”

the typicality effect (Rips et al., 1973): problem of hierarchy-
“a robin is a bird” vs. “a turkey is a bird”
