Term
antecedent control procedure
Definition
- Focusing on strategies that involve the manipulation of antecedent stimuli, to influence behaviour
o Rules, goals, modeling, physical guidance, motivation
Term
partial rules
Definition
do not identify all 3 aspects of a contingency of reinforcement; but can still control our behaviour
Term
contingency-shaped behaviour
Definition
- Behaviour that has been strengthened (or weakened) because of its immediate consequences in a particular setting
Term
rule-governed behaviour
Definition
- Behaviour that is controlled by the statement of a rule
- Often involves delayed consequences and frequently leads to immediate behaviour change
Term
when are rules especially helpful?
Definition
- When rapid behaviour change is desirable
- When consequences are delayed
- When natural reinforcers are highly intermittent
- When behaviour will lead to immediate and severe punishment
- When trial and error could be costly
Term
factors that influence the effectiveness of a rule
Definition
- Specific vs vague description of behaviour
- Specific vs vague description of circumstances in which the behaviour should occur
- Refer to probable vs improbable consequences
- Refer to sizeable consequence vs consequences that are small but add up
- Include a deadline
Term
goals
Definition
Describe a level of performance toward which an individual or a group should work
Term
SMART goals
Definition
- S – specific
o Be very clear you want to achieve
o Consider breaking the goal down into smaller steps
- M – measurable
o How will you know when you achieved your goal?
o What will be different? What will you have started?
o What will you have stopped doing or be doing less of?
- A – achievable/attainable
o Ensure your goals are not too high
o Consider stting smaller goals on your way to the big one
- R – relevant/realistic and resourced
o Is this achievable with the resources you have?
o Are there any resources you need before you can, or to help you, achieve your goal?
- T – time-bound
o Set a reasonable time limit to achieve your goal
o Consider different time limits for smaller sub steps
Term
behavioural sleep therapy
Definition
- Use of rule-governed therapy to help promote healthy sleep habits and address sleep problems
Term
modeling
Definition
- A procedure whereby a sample of a given behaviour is presented to an individual to induce that individual to engage in a similar behaviour
Term
generalized imitation
Definition
an individual, after learning to imitate a number of behaviours, learns to imitate a new response on the response first trial without reinforcement
Term
physical guidance
Definition
- The application of physical contact to induce an individual to go through the motions of the desired behaviour
Term
situational inducement
Definition
- Influencing a behaviour by using situations and occasions that already exert control over the behaviour
Term
rearranging existing surroundings
Definition
moving an activity to a new location; relocating people; changing the time of the activity
Term
motivation
Definition
o An inner drive that causes people to act in certain ways
o Internal cause of behaviour
o Does not really fit with behavioural perspective
Term
motivating establishing operations (MEOs)
Definition
- Temporarily increase the effectiveness of a consequence as a reinforcer or as a punisher (And thereby increases or decreases the likelihood of an associated behaviour)
Term
motivating abolishing operations (MAOs)
Definition
- Temporarily decrease the effectiveness of consequence as a reinforcer or as a punisher (and thereby decreases of increases the likelihood of an associated behaviour)
Term
unconditioned motivating operations (UMOs)
Definition
- Value-altering effect is innate
- Behaviour-altering effect is learned
Term
conditioned motivating operations (CMOs)
Definition
- Both the value-altering effect and the behaviour altering effect are learned
Term
sD
Definition
a cue that tells you what to do get what you already want
Term
CMEO
Definition
a cue that changes what you want (makes you want something), and tells you what to do to get what you now want
Term
s∆
Definition
a cue that tells you that emitting a particular behaviour will not lead to something that you want (ie. Will not be reinforced)
Term
discriminate variables
Definition
are related to differential availability of an effective form of reinforcement given a particular type of behaviour
Term
motivative variables
Definition
are related to the differential reinforcing effectiveness of environmental events
