Term
Learning is not passed through generations, however the capacity to learn is passed between generations. Is learning considered an adaptation?
Definition
No. An adaption must span generations therefore learn is not an evolutionary adaptation.
Term
In an evolutionary graph, what axis would represent time and what axis would represent species' change?
Definition
Time is usually depicted on the y axis or the vertical line of an evolutionary graph and species' change on the x axis or horizontal line.
Term
Did Darwin invent evolution?
Definition
Darwin did not invent evolution however he did create a mechanism for it.
Term
Explain the following statement: "Evolutionary is deaf, dumb and blind".
Definition
It refers to the fact that evolution does not require cognition.
Term
What was Lamark's theory called and what did Lamark believe of extinction?
Definition
His theory was eventually called Transformism and Lamark did not believe in extinctions, rather he felt we simply do not recognize the species due to significant changes.
Term
What was name of the ship Darwin sailed on what was his position on the crew?
Definition
The ship was called the "Beagle" and Darwin was a naturalist (an unpaid position to take biological and geological samples).
Term
Darwin did not publish his findings until 1858, even though his last trip was in 1836. Why?
Definition
Darwin felt that his explanations would be considered heresy and "kill the church".
Term
True or False: Alfred Russell Wallace believe in talking to the dead.
Definition
True, which is why he was not as well respected in the scientific community during his time.
Term
Did Darwin believe in the Blending Theory of Inheritance?
Definition
Yes Darwin believed in Blending Theory even though it is in direct conflict with the Theory of Natural Selection. In blending theory the extremes disappear which would mean the species would all move toward the average.
Term
Explain the branching of the lineage?
Definition
A single species can give rise to two new species.
Term
Differentiate between "survival of the fittest and "survival of the average"?
Definition
Survival of the fittest refers to natural selection which assumes the best will survive and reproduce. Survival of the average refers to the blending theory which assumes that the best traits will be lost because any mating between a strong adaptation and a weak one will produce offspring that are inferior to one of their parents
Term
