Jean Fautrier, Head of a Hostage no.22

Series of the Hostages. Head of a Hostage, The Flayed, The Massacre. He would use “candy” colors. Used plaster and poastel dusting to create work (crumpled and thrown). Colors were kitsch. Makes things strange, and doesn’t feed into expectations. (*Parodied how the Nazi’s handled the war, “everything was okay” but it really hid something terrible) Really held true to Art Brut, and the idea of the formless.

Art Brut
Definition

Works  produced by persons unscathed by artistic culture. Everything is pure artistic, and raw, completely reinvented by artists’ own impulses. Drawing should deny figure any particular shape, and prevent assumption. Destruction of form. Return to something completely uncultured. Mental institution art, natives. Weird perspectives, obsessive details.
