Term
Why polish amalgam restoration?
Definition
If properly marginated, will resist tarnsih and corrosion, if done correctly, will be resistant to plaque, should not be polish for 24 hrs.
Term
A well polished and marginated amalgam restoration will be more resistant to plaque accumulation. T or F
Definition
True
Term
When should an amalgam restoration be polished?
Definition
Not for at least 24 hrs after condensation to allow for complete crystallization
Term
How do you detect excess amalgam on a restoration?
Definition
Used an explorer going from tooth structure to amalgam. If you hear a click or fell a jump it is excess
Term
When sub-marginal areas are detected in the gingival 2/3 of the proximal the restoration should be removed and replaces. T or F
Definition
True
Term
When does a sub-marginal area not need to be removed?
Definition
Sub marginal areas (.2 mm or less) occurring in the occlusal 1/3 of the proximal and on the occlusal surface can be finished by judicious removal of enamel.
Term
What stone do you use to smooth the occlusal MARGINS and at what angle?
Definition
The flame shaped white stone at a 45 degree angle to the margin.
Term
How do you fix marginal discrepancies in the grooves areas?
Definition
Use the point of the 12 fluted bur
Term
THE OCCLUSAL SURFACE OF THE AMALGAM IS SMOOTHED USING WHAT TYPE OF BUR?
Definition
Smoothed the occlusal surface using the appropriate sizes of steel finishing burs. Bur should be dulled by running on extracted tooth first. Also bur should rotate from amalgam toward the tooth.
Term
The Steel burs used to smooth the occlusal surface of the teeth are used in which order and why?
Definition
Start with a #6 bur and smooth all the areas possible. the larger burs are there is less chance of digging into the margins of amalgam.
Term
What is a #1/2 bur used for?
Definition
It is used to smooth the depths of the grooves and pit areas
Term
The proximal edges are smoothed with what?
Definition
A medium Soft- lex disc. The disc can also be used to smooth the marginal ridge and portions of the occlusal amalgam. The disc is flexible and will bend to confom to the anatomy of the occlusal area
Term
What can you  use to correct a slight sub-marginal area on the occlusal 1/3 of the proximal wall?
Definition
Use thecourse finishing disc to remove a slight amt of enamel
Term
What do you use to remove amalgam from the proximal surfaces after condensation?
Definition
Used a sharp #2 or #39 knife. Must be very sharp to shave hardened amalgam
Term
Describe polishing the inter proximal surfaces with polishing strips.
Definition
Polish in a shoeshine manner with the strips going from the coarse to medium to fine and finally extra fine.
Term
When and how is the prophy cup and pumice used?
Definition
At the end of polishing use pumice and prophy cup to further smooth occlusal and accessible proximal areas. The edge of the cup should be in the grooves and the bowl of the cup on the ridges so that the anatomic forms are not removed while accessing the grooves.
Term
Prophy cup may overheat amalgam. What are the two resulting problems of this?
Definition

Irreversible damage to the pulpal tissue.

Mercury wil vaporize at 140 degree F resulting in a pitted and weakened amalgam surface.

Term
When should you use firm pressure? The application of pumice or of tin oxide with alcohol.
Definition
Used firm pressure with slow rotations when applying pumice. Used fast rotation and low pressure when applying tin oxide mixture
Term
Why do we use Tin Oxide?
Definition
Tin oxide is applied to give a final luster in conjunction with use of fine and extra fine discs
Term
Outline how to use tin oxide.
Definition
dry tooth surface, apply gentle stream of air while using tin oxide to evaporate the alcohol, tin oxide blows aways as alcohol evaporates. Surface should be sexy and lustrous. If scratches go and use burs or pumice
Term
What do you look for when examining a polished restoration?
Definition
properly carve, all margins undetectable with tip of explorer no damaged tissue
