Maximum Allowance for Secondary Expenses:

Funeral home and remains interred in a non-government cemetery

Remains consigned to a funeral home and interred in a government cemetery

OR

Remains cremated and retained by the PADD

Maximum Allowance for Secondary Expenses:

Remains consigned directly to a government cemetery

OR

Remains are cremated and consigned directly to a government cemetery

 Maximum Allowance when PADD Makes ALL Arrangements:

Remains interred in a nongovernment cemetery

OR

Remains are cremated and scattered or interred (includes ground burial and coumbarium)

Maximum Allowance when PADD Makes ALL Arrangements:

OR

Remains are cremated and retained by the PADD

Entitlements for Military members under Unusual Circumstances: AWOL

Same eligibility as Active duty unless dropped from rolls before death

Entitlements for Military members under Unusual Circumstances: Dropped from rolls

No mortuary entitlements

Entitlements for Military members under Unusual Circumstances: Undetermined Military Status

PADD makes arrangements and submits a claim to AFMAO for evaluation and reimbursement determination

Entitlements for Military members under Unusual Circumstances: Death in a VA hospital

Nearest active duty Air Force installation will assume Mortuary Affairs responsibility

Entitlements for Military members under Unusual Circumstances: Body Not Recoverable

-Memorial service, military honors, furneral travel and authorized number of interment flags and flag cases.

-VA provides a memorial marker.

-PADD reimbursed for memorial service

Entitlements for Military members under Unusual Circumstances: Subsequent Recovery

If additional remains are found, MAO should obtain directions for subsequent recovery of remains to include:

-Disinterment of remains to associate all portions of remains followed by re-interment of all remains

-Subsequent remains disposed of by a medcal facility

-May occur after a search and recovery for human remains is terminated due to logistical reasons enven though not all remains have been recovered.

-Additional remains can be found later.

-MAO should ask PADD if he/she wants to be contacted if this occurs.

-Commercial aircraft

-Hearse or a service car

-Dedicated government aircraft in CONUS

Remains transported from place of death to AFMAO or the nearest OCONUS mortuary facility by military airlift.

Remains from theater of war will be transported to final destination via military-contracted aircraft unless the PADD selects the commercial air.

Expenese paid for by PADD

Costs may be applied towards secendary expense allowance

Prohibition of Arrival and Additional Ceremonies

Only one set of Military Funeral Honors allowed; additional responsibility of home unit (not base Honor guard)

1. Spouse (including remarried)

2. Children: step, adopted, illegitimate

3. Parents: natural, adoption, spouse's parents, loco parentis

4. Siblings

5. PADD: surviving spouse, blood relatives, adoptive relatives, I loco parentis

6. If no 1-4: PADD +2 persons closely related to deceased selected by the PADD

Entitled to a 20-person detail:

-6 pall bearers

-8-person firing party (including NCOIC)

-bugler

-4-person color guard

-Detail OIC or NCOIC

Chaplain may participate if requested, but not considered part of the detail

Military Funeral Honors:

Retirees & Reservists Not on Duty

Entitled to a 7-person team

-OIC or NCOIC

-6 dual members: pall bearers and firing party

Military Funeral Honors:

Veterans, Civilians During Wartime, & Uniformed Services

Entitled to a 2-person team:

One must be an Air Force representative (Officer or Enlisted) who folds and presents interment flag and plays Taps.

1. Active Duty and ARC rated officers and non-rated career aviators

2. Non-career aviators (nurses, med techs, intel, etc.) when they die in the line of duty while performing aviation duties

3. Dignitaries of Armed Forces and Fed government

4. AF 3 & 4 star General Officers (Active duty or retired)

5. Congressional Medal of Honor or Air Force Cross Recipients (Active duty or retired)

6. Aviators with at least one aerial victory (Active duty or retired)

7. Chief Master Sergeants of the Air Force (CMSAF)

8. USAF Prisoners of War (active duty, retired, or honorable separated)
