Term
a las siete de la mañana
Definition

at seven in the morning

OJO: Use "las" (or "la una") to describe time.

OJO: Notice "de."

OJO: Remember "mañana" can mean "morning" or "tomorrow," depending on the context.

Term
La mamá se enoja.
Definition

The mom gets/becomes angry.

OJO: Notice that we use "se" for getting/becoming an emotion. It's like saying "She angrifies herself."

OJO: Accent on mamá.

Term
¿De qué color es?
Definition

What color is it?

OJO: We use "de" because the thing is "of a color," it's not actually just a color.

OJO: "qué" has an accent because it's a question word.

OJO: Notice "de" goes at the beginning.

OJO: "Es" works for "(it) is/is (it). Don't use "lo" here.

Term
Don se sienta en el sofá.
Definition

Don sits on the sofa.

OJO: Compara "Se sienta" (sentarse, to sit) with "se siente" (sentirse, to feel).

OJO: We use "se" because he's technically seating "himself."

OJO: Accent on "sofá."

OJO: "Sofá" is actually masculine because it comes from Arabic.

Term
Ana está frustrada.
Definition

Ana is frustrated.

OJO: Use "está" for emotions.

OJO: Notice "-ada" for "-ed": Frustration has happened to her so she is now "frustrate-ed."

OJO: Use "-ada" and not "-ado" because it is describing her and she is a girl.

Term
Ana ve a su amiga Sara.
Definition

Ana sees her friend Sara.

OJO: Compare "ve a" (sees) with "va a" (goes to).

OJO: Remember to put the "personal a" between a verb and the person you are doing the verb to.

OJO: Use "su" for "her" because Sara is something that "belongs to" Ana in this sentence, like "su casa."

Term
por tres meses
Definition

for three months

OJO: Use "por" and not "para" to talk about doing something for an amount of time.

OJO: The singular of "meses" is "un mes," not "un mese."

COGNADOS: "Mes" and "menstruation"--monthly things.

Term
La escuela va a pagar el transporte.
Definition
The school is going to pay (for) the transportation.
SPELLING: "Escuela" is "cu" (/kw/) and not "qu" (/k/).
OJO: "Va a pagar" together means "is going to pay." Or you could use just "paga" for "(will) pay."
OJO: Notice you don't need to say "pagar por."
